Hi folks, Christy here. Today, we're shedding light on the troubling realities of domestic violence both nationally and here locally in Ohio. National statistics reveal that one in four women and one in nine men will experience severe intimate partner physical violence. Domestic violence extends beyond physical abuse, encompassing emotional, psychological, financial, and digital abuse, all aimed at controlling another person in a relationship.
The impact of domestic violence goes far beyond the individuals directly involved, affecting families, communities, and generations to come. On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States, totaling over 10 million men and women annually. Additionally, one in three women and one in four men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner.
In Ohio, 38% of women and 33% of men report experiencing physical violence, stalking, or sexual violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime. Over 81 domestic violence fatalities were reported in Ohio last year, highlighting the life-and-death nature of these situations. Ohio ranks in the top 10 states with the highest rates of domestic violence homicide, emphasizing the need for greater awareness, resources, and legal protections.
Raising awareness and breaking the silence around domestic violence is critical in tackling this epidemic. If you or someone you know is in danger, please reach out to local or national resources for support. Domestic violence thrives in silence, but together we can break the cycle and bring about lasting change.
